This is my last post as my project comes to an end. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t critique my own project, so that is what I am going to do. Here is my list of things that I have to say:
- My drawings are HORRIBLE. Some of them are mediocre at best and they look as though a child did them. I was very rushed with my illustrations and it shows. I wish I had payed one of my more artisic, puntual classmates to do this for me. I honestly pushed that part of the project aside and I shouldn’t have.
- I need to bind it. I think I am going to. It looks very unprofessional and “naked”. I need to figure out how to do this.
- My story is boring. I needed to put more time into it. I didn’t edit it as much as I should have. My first draft was practically my final draft. Time really got away from me. I honestly forgot about this project for a while (thanks to homework and activities), and it shows in my writing.
- I like my cover and title. (the title is Question? Internet.) I kept it simple. I was going to do something cheesy, but I figured I would tell it how it is. I also like the art I put on the cover. It is a bit better than the rest of it. (I will add picures once it is bound)
- I spent too much time researching with my deadline. But I’m glad I did it. (See below)
Finally, I will give you my advice.
- RESEARCH. Learn everything you can. This was the one thing that I did well. I acually think that I spend too much time doing this with my deadline. If you don’t have a deadline, take all the time you can. When I was rushing around to finish, I was glad I had those rules so that I didn’t waste a lot of time going around in circles.
- If you can’t draw, PRACTICE. Or, just get someone else to do it. Illustrating caused me lots of stress.
- Don’t do this if you have a strict deadline. Do it for fun, or as a hobby. Deadlines cause stress, and you may not get something that you are happy with. I did not. I would have saved myself lots of stress if I hadn’t done this for a project. I definatly want to try it again under different circumstances.
- Write about something that really, REALLY interests YOU. I focused too much on what kids want. This made it hard for me to write something acceptable.
- Write more than one draft, for obvious reasons.
- Be serious about what you are doing. Don’t push it to the backburner. It will only get harder if you do.
- Get insperation from other people. Your idea doesn’t have to be 100% original. If you like another author’s ideas, use them! (Sparingly)
- Do not wait until the last minute. It will kill your mind.
- Work in an environment that doesn’t allow many distractions. Your mind will work more efficiently.
Well, those are my book writing tips. This was truly an experiance, and I’m glad that I did it. It really opened my eyes to how DIFFICULT book writing is. As a person who writes random short stories for fun, I though it was going to be a piece of cake. I was so very wrong. I didn’t know about the rules, I totally forgot about the illustrations, and I neglected the fact that I would have to write for kids. All I can say is that authors do not get enough credit. So, the next time you read one of those silly picture books, try to think of all of the work behind it.
This project is coming to an end. The story is written(mostly), and the pitures are coming (remember when I said that I wasn’t worried? I should have been. This is a disaster). It is due in two days. I am freaking out. I don’t think that I am going to be able to finish my project to the best of my ability, and I have failed to do some of the things that I originally said that I was going to. These things are:
- Binding my book with cardboard. I have no idea how to do this, and I don’t want to ruin my pages by trying.
- Researching the publishing process. This was something that I was really interested in doing, and I just ran out of time. I will still do this, but it won’t be counted in the project. It is an interesting topic, and I may send a final copy of my book to a publisher if I figure out how
Overall, I am happy that I did this project, even though it caused me lots of stress. I have produced something that I am kind of proud of, even though I didn’t get to do everything that I wanted to. It tested my abilities-something that I don’t think a lot of my classmates projects did-and I am glad. If I were to do this again, I would set my goals lower. I would also enlist some help with the illustrations. If I have one piece of advice to give anyone who wants to try this, I would say to ALWAYS research writing stories before you actually do. There are so many rules that go with it and it is always better to be safe than sorry. I will write another advice post though. That will be my very last post on this blog.
This story is killing me.
I am an awful artist. This week, I tried my hand at illustrating. It was a disaster. I am horrible. I managed to get something useable, but, honestly, I am never going to get anything better. I watched countless YouTube tutorials. I just can’t do it. I will take a picture and insert it at some point (I lost the notebook that I drew everything in). I think I have Ned and Bill solidified. That is it. I am really glad that this is a light cartoon book, and not a realistic cartoon picture book. I used a mix of videos to come up with what I have and I found that the most difficult part of the process were the facial expressions. It is very easy to make someone look creepy. I have a basic human template. The “Bad Guys” don’t have to look pretty, so I am not TOO worried.
I am also falling VERY behind on this blog. As the school year is coming to an end, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with this project. Truthfully, this entire week was a bit of a fail. The only positive things that happened were my human templates.
It has been awhile since I have posted, so this week, I wanted to tell you how the book was coming along. Truthfully, it really hasn’t. I have missed lots of school and have been pretty busy. This book has been placed on the backburner, which is my first fail: time. When I started this project, I thought I would have plenty of time to finish. I did not take everything else going on in my life into consideration. I am also HORRIBLE at time management and I get distracted very easily. This is not helping my cause. My second fail was handwriting my book. This is a terrible idea if you are writing with a deadline. It took me an extra 30 min. of my precious work time to type everything out, since I do not plan on having my awful handwriting in the final copy of it. I’m sure I will have more fails as this project goes on, and I will report them. Honestly, I am starting to hate this project and my initial excitment is fading. This is a truly difficult project. I am about 3/4 of the way finished with my writing, when honestly, I should be starting my final draft. This is not going to be good.
